When I first saw the synopsis of Called to Be Amish I was intrigued. I love to read books about the Amish. Their lifestyle fascinates me. This book, however, is unique. It’s unlike any other Amish book I’ve read before.
Marlene C. Miller was not born into an Amish family. In her late teens, however, she falls in love with a young Amish gentleman. This book is her memoir of her journey to join the Amish community.
About the Book
Fewer than one hundred people have joined the Old Order Amish and stayed since 1950. Marlene C. Miller is one of them. In this rare memoir, Marlene recounts her unhappy and abusive childhood, how she throws herself into cheerleading and marching band, and how she falls in love with Johnny, the gentle young Amish man who helps her lace her ice skates.
Against the wishes of both sets of parents, Marlene and Johnny get married and begin a family. Follow the author on this unusual journey to find out how God s love called her out of bitterness and depression and into the warm embrace of her new Amish community.
Accompany her as she dons an Amish dress and prayer covering and gets baptized. Learn how she endures the strain of ten children, a hundred-acre farm, and accidents and tragedy, and find out how she comes close to walking away from it all. Turning Amish has proven to be anything but plain and simple for this former majorette. But nearly fifty years later, Marlene is still living out God’s call as an Old Order Amish woman.
About the Author
Marlene C. Miller joined the Amish as an adult and has been a member of the Old Order Amish for almost 50 years. She and her husband of forty-eight years live on a farm in Ohio surrounded by their nine children, more than forty grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
This book was very interesting. Told in the first person, it is written as if she is just telling a story to someone over a cup of coffee or tea. At times it jumps around.
I find the whole journey fascinating as Marlene starts her story with her abusive childhood. She recounts how she meets and falls in love with Johnny, an Amish man. He actually leaves his family to marry Marlene. They begin their lives together and start a family, and Marlene feels led to join the Amish community. They work together to continue to grow their family through some very hard times. They face trials and triumphs, and they rely on God and each other to survive.
Marlene Miller doesn’t sugar-coat the Amish lifestyle as many Amish novels tend to do. She talks candidly about the hardships of that lifestyle as well as the blessings of the way the Amish rally around each other as needed.
If you enjoy reading about the Amish, and you’re looking for something a little different, check out Called to Be Amish. It offers a unique look at the community.
