Over the past several years, I seen people talk about having “one word” to focus on for the upcoming year. A word they use to define the year to come. It could be a goal or a way they want to live their lives. I’ve been thinking about and praying about what my word should be for 2014. Would it be “JOY” to remind me to find joy in my every day. Would it be “PEACE” to remind me to be at peace with my new station in life? It wouldn’t be either of those, but it would be both of those, too.
My word for 2014 is THRIVE. As you can see below, THRIVE means to “grow vigorously; do well; flourish”. After my husband was transferred to OH, my 2013 took a nose-dive! He lived almost an entire year in OH while the kids and I lived in TX. It was a rocky time for all of us as I tried to juggle by myself what we had built together. I don’t think I did anything 100%, because I was just trying to make it from one day to the next accomplishing “most” of my to-dos. I was bitter about the move itself which made my attitude less than ideal. I’m tired of surviving – just moving from one day to the next. I’m miss doing the things I’m passionate about. Now is the time to make a change! A new year… a new outlook…a new life plan!
I do know that God has a plan for me and for my family. I know that his plan is for us to find our place in this new town and to thrive. I am tired of just surviving! I’m tired of just ticking things off a to-do list without having any passion to drive me. So, this year – 2014 – will be my year to THRIVE. I am going to grow in this new town. I am going to find my passion, and I’m going to flourish . My family is going to bloom where we’ve been planted.
I’m not sure what all of this will look like at the end of the year, but I do have some goals to get me started.
- Quiet time with the Lord: I’ve been working on this one, and I want to continue to build this habit. I try to wake up at least an hour before the kids so that I can read the Bible or do a devotion. I started reading through the Bible a few months ago when I reviewed the Homeschool Mom’s Bible. I do pretty good during the week when I have an alarm set, but I don’t make my quiet time a priority on the weekends. I want to change that. The past few weeks, I’ve been reading Putting on the Spirit for my morning devotions. I’m almost finished with this book, and I need to start looking for a new one.
- Grow my Etsy store: Years ago, I had a thriving Etsy/Ebay business. I closed it when we moved to TX six years ago. Sewing, crocheting, crafting. These are some of the things I’m passionate about! But, I’ve put my passions aside to raise my family. Now that the kids are all older, I find that I actually have a bit of “free” time. My goal is to get back to crafting. I love creating things with my own hands that other people can use and enjoy.
- Relationships: We’ve been in our new house for 5 months. I haven’t yet made any friends. However, I plan to use this as an opportunity to grow my relationships with my family. I can use this time to date my kiddos and my hubby and help those relationships flourish. The friendships will come as we continue to get settled, but no relationship is more important than the ones that are under my roof.
I’m anxious to see what the Lord has in store for my family and me in the upcoming year. I’m excited to watch us grow together in the coming months. I am blessed beyond measure, and I want to begin to live life to the fullest!
