Right now, Emma and I are studying World War II in our history studies. I like to supplement our studies with living books. I check out quite a few books on each topic we study. I leave them on Emma’s book sling, and I let her choose what books to read.
Several times a week, I give her some free-reading time. She chooses one or more books from her sling and takes them to her room to read. She likes this better than me assigning books to her.
Sometimes, I assign books if there is one I specifically want her to read. But, most often, I leave the choice to her. She tends to read more books this way since she’s reading what she’s interested in.
